Oral Medicine is that area of special competence in dentistry concerned with diseases that involve the oral and para oral structures, especially the oral manifestations of systemic disease and behavioural disorders and the oral and dental treatment of medically compromised patients.

The clinical section in the Department of Oral Medicine is equipped with 18 dental chairs to examine patients. On an average 300-350 patients are examined everyday for various oral diseases and referred to various departments for further treatment. A detailed case history is taken with emphasis on medical history, drug allergies and examination is performed for all patients. A provisional diagnosis is then arrived at, following which necessary investigations are conducted and treatment is planned. Cases are documented using intraoral camera and records are maintained for epidemiological studies. Patients with deleterious habits are counselled, educated and motivated to discontinue the same. Special care is taken for patients with systemic diseases by referring them for relevant investigations and concerned physician / specialist for opinion and consent for various dental procedures are obtained.

Apart from the commonly occurring dental caries, pulp and periapical diseases and periodontal diseases, many cases of potentially malignant disorders, oral cancer, orofacial pain, TMJ disorders, salivary gland disorders, developmental anomalies, maxillofacial trauma are diagnosed and medically managed in the department. Cases are followed up at regular intervals to assess patients’ response to treatment.

The department also serves as a referral centre for diagnosis of complex cases from other private clinics and hospitals.

The Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology section is well equipped with 3 intraoral x-ray machines and one conventional extra-oral x-ray machine. There is provision for both manual and automatic processing.
The Digital Imaging section has a radio visuography (RVG) system, Kodak 8000C Digital panoramic and cephalometric system with Laser camera. This machine is extensively used in diagnosis, treatment planning and research projects by post graduates and staff of the institution.

A seminar room equipped with audio-visual aids and an up to date library for academic discussions is attached to the department.

The undergraduate students are trained through lectures, demonstrations, clinical case discussions, seminars and tutorials with emphasis on problem based learning. The students are evaluated periodically by conducting theory, viva voce and clinical examinations. Papers and posters are presented by the undergraduates at National UG conventions annually and have won several prizes.

Ever since the MDS course started in the department of OMR in 1992-1993, 37 PG students have completed the course successfully. Postgraduate students are trained meticulously through case discussions, journal reviews, seminars and inter department meetings. Interesting cases are recorded and short term research projects are undertaken, apart from dissertation and library dissertation. Postgraduate students present papers and posters at various state/ national conferences and have won several best paper/ poster awards.
